Words Speak Louder Than Actions

Words will always speak louder than actions.

I am not oblivious that people’s actions show their genuine attitude; perhaps talking the talk without walking the walk can mean actions are more significant. Actions display authenticity but are always evidence of what has been spoken. To put it another way, actions cannot stand on their own, they do not create words, but words create actions in all contexts.

We cannot underestimate the power of communication through words. Entrepreneurs understand how inner dialogue powers them through the right actions. Boxers, as much as possible, do not allow negative self-talk to penetrate their mindset. They know what they say to themselves negatively makes them their own worse enemies. Teachers must repeatedly combat that negative inner voice and reframe their thoughts to find the motivation to overcome critical moments during the school term. The list goes on; I dare to say words create actions in every profession.

From simple acts of kindness to great public speeches, words can inspire a nation, motivate people to action, provide great comfort where there has been tragic loss, and heal. And yet, they still create wars and bring about harm and hurt. More emphasis should be placed on our ability to express ourselves clearly, speak words to impact others positively, and receive words to understand other people’s perspectives better. Our world is becoming more diverse and interconnected, so irrespective of where we are and what we do. We benefit more when the end goal is for the benefit of others.

I cannot emphasise the number of times I have misunderstood a message, been easily offended by a comment or just not communicated clearly enough because I was so focused on what I wanted to say or hear. And you can imagine the following actions were not so pleasant either. This is why it is so important to use words responsibly and to think carefully about their impact. We need to be mindful of our words' power and use them for good, not for harm.

We can agree that words without actions are useless, and words with actions can be highly influential. As to actions speaking louder than words, I choose to disagree. Actions have no voice without words. Let’s be more mindful of what we say and how we say it.
